WELCOME TO LOUISIANA FIRST LEGO LEAGUE JR.!

Focused on building an interest in science and engineering in children ages 6-10 (grades K-4), FIRST® LEGO® League Jr. is a hands-on program designed to capture young children's inherent curiosity and direct it toward discovering the possibilities of improving the world around them. It features a real-world challenge to be solved by research, critical thinking and imagination. Guided by adult coaches and the FIRST LEGO League Jr. Core Values (teamwork, discovery, and the all-important Gracious Professionalism), students work with LEGOs and motorized moving parts (LEGO® WeDo Robotics!) to build ideas and concepts and present them for review.

Each yearly Challenge has two parts, the LEGO Model and the Show Me Poster. Working in teams of two to six children and guided by at least two adult coaches, teams work to complete the Challenge. The culmination of the hard work for many teams is the participation in a FIRST LEGO League Jr. event.  Volunteer Reviewers at the event interview the teams to learn about their LEGO Model and Show Me poster. Teams can also show off their work on the Jr.FLL Online Showcase. All the teams are celebrated and leave with an award. While participation in a FIRST LEGO League Jr. event is not a requirement, we encourage Louisiana teams to attend our LA FIRST LEGO League Jr. Expo in New Orleans.  Teams can also show off their work on the FIRST LEGO League Jr. Online Showcase.

Who runs FIRST LEGO League Jr. in Louisiana?

LA FIRST LEGO League Jr. is run through FIRST Louisiana-Mississippi, Inc., a 100% volunteer run not-for-profit organization dedicated to the ideal of building and bringing programs to enrich science and technology learning for the students of Louisiana and Mississippi.  FIRST Robotics Competition Team 1912 Combustion partners with FIRST Louisiana-Mississippi, Inc. to spread FIRST LEGO League Jr. in this area by mentoring existing teams, by helping to found new ones and by coordinating and hosting the FIRST LEGO League Jr. expo in New Orleans at the FIRST LEGO League Regional Championship. How can I start a team?

Anyone can start a FIRST LEGO League Jr. team. Frequently teams are made up of neighborhood groups, school groups, home school organizations, Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts, family members, and after school programs.  Excellent information on starting your team can be found on the FIRST LEGO League Jr. website! (back to top)

How many adults do I need for a team?

You need at least two adult to serve as coaches, but you may have extra adults for support.  Coaches can be teachers, parents, scout leaders, relatives, friends, etc. (back to top)

Who is eligible to participate?

FIRST LEGO League Jr. is open to children ages  6-10 ( grades K-4).  Many teams are affiliated with an organization (ie. school, Scouts, 4H, etc.), but you do not have to be.  Teams may be formed by anyone.  The minimum number of team participants is 2 and the maximum number is 6 students - FIRST rule! (back to top)

How can I find a team for my child?

We cannot place children on FIRST LEGO League Jr. teams, nor can we share coach contact information due to privacy regulations. Having said that, there are some things that you can do

  • FIRST TeamUp allows users to search for team information such as: Teams accepting new members; Teams looking for mentors; Mentors looking for teams; Parents looking for teams; Parents connecting with other parents (neither party is affiliated with an official team).  Teams must opt into this system, so not all teams will be in here.  Note: Even if you are looking for a team to join, we strongly suggest that you also specify that you are looking to “connect” with other people when creating your account because there are typically more people looking to join teams than there are teams looking to recruit more members.
  • You could also contact your child's school/scout troup/etc. to see if they have a team or might be interested in forming a team.
  • And finally, YOU could become a coach and start a team! (back to top)
